What is it?

It can be challenging to translate a photographic project into a concept and design for a photobook which does more than just replicate a set of images on the page. This workshop covers a proccess for doing exactly that, looking at how you can distill a project into a concept which can help you make key design decisions, then reviewing some fundamental concepts from graphic design, and providing a practical introduction to Adobe Indesign.

What does it cover?

This workshop will lead participants through a series of discussions, examples and exercises designed to explore the formulation of a concept for a photobook, and then ways of developing that concept into a book design which can form the basis of a digital or physical dummy photobook. It covers ways of developing a concept based on a pre-existing body of work, a discussion of fundamental graphic design principles useful for book design, and then moves on to looking at how to start laying out a design for a dummy book in Adobe Indesign. Who should do it?

Anyone interested in developing a photographic project into a photobook. Participants do not need prior experience of book development, graphic design or Adobe Indesign as the basics of all three will be covered during the workshop.

What do I need to bring?

A laptop with a copy of Adobe Indesign installed. A 7 day Indesign trial can be downloaded and installed from here. It would also be useful for participants to have a project in progress or completed which they can use as source material for the Indesign stage of the workshop.

Timetable

  • 9.50 – Participants arrive ready for a 10.00 start.
  • 10.00 to 11.30 Developing a raw project into a book concept which can be used to inform design choices.
  • 11.30 to 11.40 Coffee break.
  • 11.40 to 13.00 Graphic design fundmentals, including formats, layouts, typography, colours, and different approaches to using images
  • 13.00 to 14.00 Lunch (included in workshop fee).
  • 14.00 to 15.30 An introduction to Adobe Indesign, covering the fundamental steps and tools needed to set up and start designing a book project
  • 15.30 to 15.40 Tea break.
  • 15.40 to 17.00 More advanced Indesign techniques, packaging files and exporting for print, final questions and discussion about the day’s topics.
  • 17.00 Workshop ends

 

Where is it?

The workshop takes place at my studio in south London, meaning that participants have access to a wide range of materials and resources from my numerous projects and teaching. Lunch is served in my home and there are also local shops and eateries for anyone who prefers to go out for lunch. By foot the studio is five minutes from Selhurst station, and 15 minutes from Norwood Junction station, and is also on the 468, X68 and 50 bus routes.

The fine print:

I believe workshops should be small and intimate, and for that reason numbers are capped at 7 participants per workshop. However, this small group size also means I need at least 6 participants to book in order for them to run. In the unlikely event of a workshop having to be cancelled participants will have their full fee returned to them. Participants needing to cancel up to two weeks before the workshop will have their fee returned less a 20% charge. Cancellations made less than two weeks before the day of the workshop are non-refundable.
