An intensive day long workshop on strategies for funding documentary work.

What is it?
Few photographers go into the field for the money, but we still need financial resources to make new work and keep mind and soul together. This workshop looks at several different options for funding new work, from a detailed overview of preparing applications for traditional grants and residencies, to crowdfunding and establishing an online store.
What does it cover?
The workshop is divided into four teaching blocks. The first looks at ways to write better project proposals and descriptions, and ways to make the application process as efficent as possible. The second looks at traditional grants, prizes and residencies and how to tailor your proposal and other application materials to these. The third block discusses running a crowdfunding campaigns, and the final block looks at raising funds by selling prints, books and services and rounding up a few additional topics not covered elsewhere. Who should do it?
Photographers interested in expanding their options for generating the funds to develop new work and publish or exhibit existing projects.
How is it delivered?
The workshop is broken into four elements delivered online over the course of a day, with short breaks in between for participants to have a breather work independently on small activities on the topics covered in the previous element. The workshop is taught using a browser based video conferencing platform called Jitsi. You’ll be sent a link to join, there is no need to create an account or download anything. At the end will also have access to a recording of the workshop.
Who is leading it?
My name is Lewis Bush, I’m a photographer, researcher and writer. I’ve received over £160,000 in grants and awards, including small one off funds to support materials and elements of specific projects, year long residencies, a crowdfunding campaign that raised double it’s target, and most recently I received offers from both the AHRC and ESRC of highly competitive studentships to pursue my PhD research. I have extensive experience of online teaching and I am the course leader of the London College of Communications MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography (online). What will I need?
You’ll need a computer or tablet with an internet connection and a microphone. It would also be useful to come with a project in progress or an idea for a project you would like to apply for funding for.vesit
- 8.45 – Participants gather ready for a 9.00am start
- 9.00 to 10.30 – Preparing for applications, writing a killer proposal and assembling other key materials.
- 10.30 to 11 – Break for first independent activity
- 11.00 to 12.30 – Finding traditional grants and residencies and tailoring your application materials to them.
- 12.30 to 13.30 – Break for second independent activity and lunch
- 13.30 to 15.00 – Planning and running a successful crowdfunding campaign.
- 15.00 to 15.30 – Break for third independent activity
- 15.30 to 17.00 – Setting up an online store to sell books, prints and other things direct to your supporters.
- 17.00 – Workshop ends.

The fine print:
I believe workshops should be small and intimate, and for that reason numbers are capped at 10 participants per workshop. However this small number also means I need at least 6 participants in order for them to run. In the unlikely event of a workshop having to be cancelled participants will have their full fee returned to them. Participants needing to cancel up to one week before the workshop will have their fee returned less a 20% charge. Cancellations made less than one week before the day of the workshop are non-refundable.
